I currently live in Dehradun, so Mussoorie is obviously a regular haunt for the family. We, however, tend to enjoy Offbeat and Adventure Travel more than a stroll on the Mall Road. A stroll on the mall road is super fun by the way, nothing against it – but it gets kind of tiring and repetitive after your fourth visit in a month. Haha, told you, we do go to Mussoorie a lot!
And because of this reason, we are always on a look out for new places to explore – like Sursingdhar, Chakrata & Viraatkhai and other Offbeat Vacation spots that I’ve written about earlier. The quest for new and unexplored destinations never really ends, and recently I got a chance to experience a lodge near Mussoorie, and this post is all about it.
Last week, I went to the SeeGreen Lodges in Haithpaon with a two of my travel-addict friends, and Gauri who is four years old now and is turning out to be a big travel fan. This was an offbeat weekend trip which can easily be done from Delhi NCR as well. If you want a quick offbeat weekend from Delhi NCR or from Dehradun, Chandigarh or nearby places, but don’t want to go too far or spend a lot of time in reaching the destination, Seegreen Lodges can be good for you.
Hathipaon is about an hour’s drive from Dehradun and a taxi took us till the quaint lodge, on a Saturday morning. On the Dehradun – Mussoorie Road, there is a well marked diversion towards Hathipaon. The road is good and drivable till the very end. We were excited to spend the weekend at Seegreen Lodge because Offbeat is something I absolutely love, and also because the lodge is surrounded by a number of short trails that you can trek. And trekking the Himalayas, as you might already know, is total love for me!
When we reached the lodge, the first thing that caught my eye was the cosy and well-done interiors. There is a café on the ground floor, which serves amazing food, and is apparently quite famous. All through the weekend, it was full of tourists and travellers alike. The service is fast and the setting – against the Himalayan backdrop – is amazing. What’s not to like?
The lodge has three rooms on the first floor, and the rooms are very comfortable and tastefully done. The washrooms were clean and they have television sets in each room. The balcony outside these three rooms is command and has a big Buddha statue which became Gauri’s favourite thing there.
The room on the extreme right is the one with the best view, so try and book that if you go to the Seegreen Lodge. Right up the street from the lodge, is a temple and local households. Landour and Mussoorie are close by, and a taxi can take you there in no time.
But do not miss out on the George Everest House and the peak. A taxi can take you right up to the house, or you can also trek the distance. About 3 km return trail from the Seegreen Lodge, it’s an easy trek and would take almost 45 minutes at normal speed. This is a house were George Everest, the famous surveyor, lived for some time. Mount Everest was named after him, we were told. The trek from the house to the peak is a beautiful one too.
We also trekked to the Wishing Well, which is a 5 km straight walk from the Seegreen Lodges. It seemed like a pretty old well, with boundary around it and a small shop selling chips and tea – but the shop owner didn’t know anything about the history of this well. Some digging around revealed that you are supposed to turn your back, make a wish and throw a coin into the well. If it lands inside the water, your wish will come true. We did make quite a few wishes; I’ll keep you informed if mine comes true.
The food at the Seegreen Lodges is the very definition of comfort food. We had chocolate waffles which were delicious and Gauri’s favourites. The honey lemon tea was yummy, and so were the Mac and Cheese. The paranthas we had for breakfast here, were very good and we kept ordering more. They also have pretty other dishes like omelettes, noodles, dal – chapati and everything is yum.
The weekend at Seegreen Lodges in Hathipaon was a surprise that we loved.
Travel becomes beautiful when you’re with people you love, and this was one of those trips were none of us wanted it to end. By the end of the weekend, all of us were sad to leave but the great time we had trekking and eating all the yummy food, and the promise of exploring a new destination very soon, lifted our spirits.
Hope you liked the pictures and my experience. Do visit the Seegreen Lodges if Offbeat is your thing. There is no WiFi here, but there is plenty of other stuff – good stuff – that will keep you occupied. If five star resort luxuries are on your mind, there are plenty of mainstream hotels in Mussoorie. But if you want a getaway far from the touristy life, a vacation to rejuvenate you, Seegreen Lodge is for you.
Go there for a comfortable stay, a weekend or more away from the buzz of the busy city, to indulge in a little adventure and walks around the hills. In short, go to the Seegreen Lodges in Hathipaon, Mussoorie for a slice of peace and calm.
I was invited to stay at the SeeGreen Lodge in Hathipaon to experience the place and the service, and as always, the opinions are purely my own. Keep tuning in to Aditi’s Monologue for fun Travel Tales from Offbeat Travel, to International Trip Planning Tips – and everything in between.
