14 Offbeat Travel Pictures From Sursingdhar in The Himalayas
Offbeat Travel is my idea of relaxing. Recently, I wrote a post on a offbeat trip to Sursingdhar on Tripoto, right after my first visit to Sursingdhar in New Tehri, and after that I have been to this Offbeat Heaven a lot of times. The Himalayan Eco Lodges and Camps in Sursingdhar have a spectacular location that overlooks the New Tehri Lake and you can see the mighty Nanda Devi Mountain from here, which is the second highest peak in Indian Himalayas.
Best of Offbeat Travel: View of the resort from our room!
Himalayan Eco Lodges and Camps is a chain of Eco friendly resorts/stays/camps in the Himalayas, and Sursingdhar in New Tehri is one of their flagship resorts. The perfect offbeat travel destination, Sursingdhar is located between pristine Himalayan peaks in the New Tehri district of Uttrakhand, also known as Dev Bhumi – the Land of Gods. It is a perfect offbeat weekend getaway from Delhi NCR, Chandigarh, Dehradun and nearby cities. A trip to Sursingdhar is like a dream, with beautiful Himalayan roads and landscapes all along the way.

Sursingdhar can be a perfect holiday for everyone who likes offbeat travel and destinations: Families, couples and even young adventure seeking travellers who have the travel bug and who don’t think that Goa is the answer to all kind of wanderlust – no offence to Goa, of course.
Can’t get enough of this view.
If you are someone who wants to try offbeat travel, or someone who wants more from their vacation, Sursingdhar is the place to be. You can just relax and unwind here, drinking in the stunning views the location offers, or pick activities from their adventure menu and go for small hikes (2 to 8km) around the place, indulge in some Mountain Biking, take long walks on the Himalayan roads, try your hand at various rope activities and more.
The Stunning View.
Now, offbeat travel should not mean compromising on basic travel necessities like hygiene and cleanliness, and Sursingdhar doesn’t disappoint. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. There are regular rooms with attached toilets and there are cottages with a cosy living room leading to 2 bedrooms on either side – making it perfect for families travelling together.
The Mighty Himalayas: The best offbeat travel destination
While the view is stunning, the richexperience of staying at this lodge is what makes it exceptional. Himalayan Eco Lodges and Camps is known for its eco friendly tourism practices so you can enjoy this relaxing Himalayan getaway knowing that your vacation has little or no impact on the mountain. How do they do it, you ask? Well, for starters, they only employ locals in all their Lodges and Camps and the food you eat is prepared with local produce. Yes, relish yummy, fresh and nutritious Garhwali food. I especially love the fresh rhododendron juice here.

Among other local fruit trees, there’s an apple tree that my daughter loves to climb and pick apples. Picking apples directly from the tree! Where else do our kids get can get such an experience in our urban life? And Gauri, my 3 year old daughter, loves Sursingdhar! She plays in the gardens, the open spaces here, chases butterflies that are in plenty here, and relishes the food (which is something rare, she’s a picky eater). In winters, the clear mountain skies and sunny days are a bliss. In summers, the nights even in June are cool and crisp. The best of both worlds, really.
The staff here is incredibly warm and extremely helpful. Another thing worth mentioning about this resort is the flowers and plants that they have. It is a treat for the eyes! Various kinds of flowers bloom in every season and a wide variety of plants can be found in ever corner, lining every window and empty space. Like these pictures below:
This is an offbeat experience so don’t expect TV sets in your rooms, the entire idea is to get Outdoors and Explore. I like this thing – the Neemrana Fort Resort near Gurgaon also has the same policy of no TV sets in the rooms which makes the guests get out of their rooms to walk around and discover the place.
Pictures like this add character to the resort. This one is a picture of the ancient Lord Shiva temple in Badrinath.
Also, there is no room service except for water, tea/ coffee and evening snacks. Milk, porridge etc for kids can be requested and is served hot and fresh. All meals take place in the dining area. The dinning area is a huge space with indoors sitting as well as a few table-sets outside, overlooking the New Tehri Lake. The decore inside the dinning room is earthy and is splashed with great pictures of various Himalayan Treks and snow covered peaks. Looking at these pictures can give you a serious case of wanderlust.

Reaching Sursingdhar is easy, which is the best part of this Offbeat getaway. It is a 2 hour car drive away from Haridwar, and a taxi from Haridwar will cost you somewhere around INR 2,300. From Dehradun, it takes 3 hours and a taxi fare of INR 3,500 (approx). A lot of international tourists come to Sursingdhar from Delhi and Dehradun, and I’ve met people from UK, Japan, Germany and Italy here on my various visits. Surprisingly, Sursingdhar is more popular with international tourists than with Indians, even though the rates are very reasonable.
Must take this road trip it’s beautiful.
I guess this is because not many Indians know about it. But if you are a traveller and an Offbeat person, I suggest you check out the Himalayan Eco Lodges and Camps in Sursingdhar at least once. You will love it! And for those with kids, I can assure you that there is no greater joy for parents than getting the kids close to nature to experience the Great Indian Outdoors.
That’s me!
So, I say you give offbeat travel a chance and check out the Himalayan Eco Lodges and Camps website. And if you want, ask them to customize a package for you according to your dates and needs. And then tell me about your Offbeat experience here in comments. I’ll be waiting.
