A Family Trek in the Misty Green Hills of Wayanad in Kerala

Joining the Nilgiri hills in the state of Tamil Nadu and Vallarimala in Kerala’s Kozhikode, the Chembra Peak is the highest summit in Wayanad. It is located at a height of 2,100m and must be included in an outdoorsy and adventure-loving family vacation in this region.

Prior permission must be taken from the Meppadi Forest Office before you embark on a trek in this region. It is easy to obtain, considering the fact that the office is open seven days a week. The peak will show you all corners of Wayanad and it sure will feel like a triumph once you reach the top! Trekking to the top offers a great way to bond with your kids amidst nature.

You can start the trek at Meppadi and head upwards. It takes about three hours to reach the peak. Once you reach the peak, remember to spot the Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Nilgiris districts from up there. On the way, you will spot a delightful little heart-shaped lake called “hridhayathadakam.” The lake is said to have never dried up: just like your love for your family members! Use this as a resting point where you can click some photos that will go in your family album. It is one of the major Wayanad points of interest. You will descend into the town of Kalpetta from the peak.

What to pack for a family trek in Wayanad in Kerala 

It’s important to wear sturdy shoes for this trek. Carry ample water as the possibility of finding clean drinking water along the way is minimal. Mosquito repellent lotion and patches will also come in handy. If the weather is sunny, make sure to carry sunblock and a cap and carry windcheaters for rains.

How to reach Wayanad in Kerala 

The nearest railway station is at Kozhikode that is about 79km away and the nearest airport is Calicut International Airport that is around 92km away. The nearest bus stop is at Meppadi, which is 7.3km away from the starting point of the trek.

Entry fee

For a group of ten Indian trekkers, the charge is INR 500. For international tourists, the charges are INR 1,000 per group of ten.
