Freelancing for content is becoming a popular thing that we often read about on various social media platforms. From writing sponsored blog posts on your own blog to contributing articles to other websites, there seem to be a lot of ways to earn some money as a freelancer in India.
But how to get started as a freelancer in the content field, you ask?
Well, it is quite simple if you do your research and are ready to focus on a few aspects other than the writing itself.
I have been a freelance content writer and blogger for years now, and I’ve had my fair share of good and bad experiences. And because I think a lot of talented folks out there – some of them are my readers – are still on the fence about it, I decided to write about freelancing and how to start.
Now let’s get to the point!

5 Tips on how to start as a freelance content writer or blogger in India:
1. Showcase Your Work.
This is why having your own blog or website matters. Write quality content on your own blog, because this is like your portfolio that showcases your work, displays your style and highlights your art.
Have a beefed up About Me page with contact details, and mention that you are open to payments via PayPal. This instils confidence in a new client.
2. Trust Social Media for Promotions
Social Media is a blessing for all us freelancers, in my opinion. Not only can you showcase your work on various social media platforms, but you can also approach potential clients.
Join freelancing groups on social media. I got a retainer deal via a LinkedIn group, after responding to a requirement and confirming that I have a PayPal account. Yes, it happens!
3. Set Up an Easy and Efficient Payment System to Get Paid.
This, you need to be ready with before you get your first freelancing gig. I cannot stress enough on the importance of setting up an efficient payment-way that is also easy and works well for international clients as well. I strongly recommend PayPal because I have been using it for years now, and it works like magic.
You only have to share your PayPal ID with the client and viola, the money comes to you! I have also set up an automatic bank transfer to my Indian account, so PayPal sends the money received to my account in a set number of days.
Thanks to PayPal’s Seller Protection Policy, you don’t have to worry about online theft or fraud.
Another Fun fact: I just got USD 150 today from an international client and all I did was post my content and share my PayPal Id. Yippie!

4. Make Connections
Life is all about the connections we make, and freelancing is no different. Maintain good relations with your peers, help them out as much as you can and contribute to their growth whenever you can – because it all helps you grow in turn. Let me give you an example.
There is a contest going on at PayPal India, and I have recommended it to my freelancer friends. By referring others I have increased my chances of winning as well.
5. Ask For Referrals.
This is a very important part of the freelancing life which most of us often forget. Once you’ve landed a job and done it to the best of your efforts – and also gotten paid for it, thanks to PayPal – request your client to refer you to others.Nothing like a client referring you to someone else, take it from me!
An international client recently referred me to another client. The reason – He liked my work and my PayPal presence, for easy payments.
So these are my top tips to help you start working as a freelance blogger or content writer in India. I also like to add that it might take time to land your first couple of clients, but with quality content and smart practices, you can earn well and keep it uncomplicated.
Now go, get your first client and write away!
