Postcards From Vietnam: Travel Tales

Vietnam is probably on every travel-addict’s Dream Destination wish list, and I’m no exception. Ever since I was in school, tales of Vietnam War have kept me captive. When I was in college, a couple of guys from my batch planned their Trip to Vietnam for months and when they finally got back from their dream trip to Vietnam, their pictures capture my heart.

Every since then, I have wanted to plan an incredible trip to Vietnam and explore the enthralling and stunning country. And last week, my sister took a quick trip to Vietnam and since she is well aware of my obsession for travel in general and for Vietnam in particular, she sent me stunning pictures in a mail that was aptly titled Postcards From Vietnam: Travel Tales For An Indian Travel Blogger. Yes, I love her and I’ll kick her if she doesn’t bring back some Snake Wine for me from her trip to Vietnam, or at least some War Souvenirs (hope she’s reading this).

Here’s hoping that my trip to Vietnam goes as happily as her’s did – full frolicking and merry-making, but until then, here are the pictures she sent me, making me want to jump on a plane and join her immediately.

The Vietnam Vibe is contagious, and everywhere you look, it feels festive, almost like a celebration is on its way. What’s not to love?

One of the notable things about a Trip to Vietnam is that this is not an expensive country. I mean, sure, the tickets from India to Vietnam are clearly higher priced than say, Thailand, but the prices of food, living and other things in Vietnam are pretty reasonable. Another reason for the Indian Traveler to head to Vietnam, right?

Transport options during your Trip to Vietnam, are many but stay away from taxi scams and two wheeler motorbikes until you are an experienced rider. Overnight buses are a great way to cover long distances and save on accommodation costs, but make sure you book a top bunk as far as possible from the loo (normally situated near the back).

An eating joint in Vietnam, that my sister loved a lot! A tip about drinking in Vietnam: Vietnam has possibly the cheapest beer in the world but do not go overboard. In Hanoi there is an official curfew on bars and nightclubs, so it’s better to adhere to the timings.

What can I say about Vietnamese food that you don’t already know? Food trails are going to be a highlight of everyone’s trip to Vietnam, for sure!

A trip to Vietnam is a dream come true in many ways – From buzzing Bia Hoi’s, to braving mad traffic, Vietnam provides a rush like no other. But the markets are just the best for the shopaholic in me! The various night markets in Vietnam are amazing. My sister shopped for a lot of interesting things from this one in the picture. It’s home to some of the worlds most bustling, cheapest and wackiest!

When in markets or when dealing with street hawkers, be prepared to bargain. Also, always remember to ask permission first before taking photographs. That’s just good manners.

According to my research over the years, spring is probably the best time to visit Saigon, Mekong Delta, Hoi An and Hanoi, and Halong Bay. And if you visit Halong Bay, I suggest you stay at least 2 nights because of the road trip, poor roads, it is a long way to go for 1 night, and you see a lot more in the 2 days.

I mentioned above that the Vietnam War History has always fascinated me, and if you are planning a trip to Vietnam, I recommend you take a tour of the Củ Chi tunnels on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City and experience the underground guerrilla network for yourself. I am told it is stunning. Crawling through the hot and narrow tunnels will give you a momentary sense of what conditions must have been like during conflict. What an experience!

If you’re interested, there is also a chance to learn more about the Vietnam War and the effects of Agent Orange at Ho Chi Minh’s War Remnants Museum. It’s not an easy visit, but you’ll come out humbled about the gravity of war and its ongoing legacy.

A trip to Vietnam will enchant you, and there is juts so much to do, to see and to experience that my sister found a week to be very short! So, goes without saying, I’m planning to go for a longer time.

Another thing to remember during your trip to Vietnam is that the roads are crazier than Indian roads. Honest. You might come across full articles and travel blog posts on How To Cross Roads in Vietnam, and you might laugh – but only when you reach there, will you feel the dire need for those articles and that info. So interesting, isn’t it?

Hope this post and the pictures made you dream of a trip to Vietnam, sooner than later. I know I am super eager to explore the country! I have a few travel plans in pipeline right now, including Hong Kong (yes, again!) and Thailand (I wrote about A Trip To Thailand just this month and now I have plans, eeee!), and I’ll keep you posted when I plan. Until then, there’s always dreaming about future travels – something that keeps this travel blogger from India, motivated.

Happy Travelling!
